MAYA GURUNG-RUSSELL CAMPBELL

Maya Gurung-Russell Campbell (b. 2000) works with sculpture, image and text-based work to draw of memory– both personal and collective– in relation to land. Through, varyingly, using analogue wet-plate photography to take self-portraits derived from face-casts, reconstructing court documents to weave new narratives or knotting and stitching to manipulate the British flag, her practice antagonises dominant power structures and their implications on identity. Gurung-Russell Campbell’s practice also incorporates practices of masquerade, drawing on both her grandmother’s Nepalese heritage and mask-making artistry.

Gurung-Russell Campbell graduated from BA Photography at London College of Communication in 2021 and is currently a student on the Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at RA Schools. Selected recent exhibitions include: Christmas Show, Ginny on Frederick, London, UK (2024), RAFT, Royal Overseas League, London, UK (2024), Insufferably Sweet, The Shop at Sadie Coles HQ, London, UK (2024) and Amalgam, Chilli Art Projects, London, UK (2024).
